Mirrors have pride of place in most homes as well as having a functional use they are items of beauty. They are in general a sheet of glass with a backing of aluminium or silver that causes you to see images as reflections. Mirrors have long been used in history although not necessarily in the form we would recognise today.In Romen times they were simply shiny convex discs of metal that reflected light. The Venicians were the first to start backing glass with a thin sheet of metal to cause a reflection. the modern method of chemically coating the backs of mirrors with metallic silver dates back to 1835. Today we use a similar method, a thin layer of molten aluminium or silver is "spluttered" on to the back of  glass in a vacuum.

The mirrors surface must be completely smooth for it to be able to reflect as much of the light as possible and to transmit and absorb as little light as possible.
There is a long history of mirrors being used as functional housewares and as things of beauty and decoration. Hand mirrors were seen first,although not made from glass but highly polished metal and full length mirrors did not come in to existance until the 1st century AD.
Mirrors as room decorations became increasingly more important in the 17th Century, the frames being ornate and made from precious items such as ivory, silver or tortoiseshell. Soon because of mirrors inclusion in room decor they became traditional above the mantelpiece.Now with mirror production much easier and cheaper mirrors play an important part in the decor of many rooms in a home, work place or office. and the choice of shape,design, frame and size means that there is one to fit any requirement.
